What is a cap gun?
A cap gun or cap gun rifle is a toy gun that creates a loud sound simulating a gunshot and a puff of smoke when a small percussion cap is exploded.
Did you know cap guns were originally made of cast iron then after World War II they were mainly made of zinc alloy, but now most newer cap guns are made of plastic or die cast.
Cap guns get their name from the small discs of shock-sensitive explosive compounds that provide the noise and smoke, effectively the same as the Maynard tape primer which was a system designed by Edward Maynard to allow for more rapid reloading of muskets.

cap Gun caps
Most cap gun caps ammo are now arranged in plastic rings of eight or twelve.
There are also single caps, roll caps of 50-500, and disk caps which are usually 8-12 shots, all of which are actually extremely small versions of percussion fireworks.
Cap gun caps are usually made from what know as Armstrong's mixture,
Its primary ingredients are red phosphorus and strong oxidizer, such as potassium chlorate and potassium perchlorate.
Sulfur is used to substitute for some or all of the phosphorus to slightly decrease sensitivity and lower costs; calcium carbonate may also be present in small proportions.
Commercially, Armstrong's mixture is used in milligram quantities on the paper caps in toy cap guns and in party poppers.
The tiny powder charge is sandwiched between two paper layers which hold in the gases long enough to give a bang sound when the cap is struck.
